My Tutoring Philosophy
|
Before starting out as a tutor here at the Writing & Speaking Studio, I was unsure about the significance of my role in helping students with their writing and speaking projects. I always saw a tutor as a sort of teacher or mentor, and I wasn't sure that was me. However, once I completed my training and began having sessions with students, I realized that being a tutor is an amalgamation of many roles, including a friend, a supporter, and a listener. Writing is a very vulnerable and beautiful experience that can be intimidating to face by oneself, let alone share with others. Creating a safe space for students to share their work with me is my biggest goal as a tutor. I want them to feel comfortable expressing themselves openly and authentically through their work. My hope is that students can come to the studio aiming to complete an assignment but leave with so much more. All of us are storytellers, whether we realize it or not. As a peer consultant, I am here to assist you in articulating your story in the way that you want to. We will set aside what is "right" or "wrong" according to traditional academic English and focus on how you can tell your story in a way that's authentic to you as a writer, a student, and a person. I am here to support you in your working process and hopefully help you work through any insecurity, uncertainty, or anxiety so you can creatively articulate your ideas with confidence. Every session is a two-way street; we will learn and grow as writers together, strengthening our skills one step at a time. |
